A Winter Trek to Kumara Parvatha – Karnataka’s Toughest Trek

Introduction

For adventure enthusiasts, Kumara Parvatha winter trek is one of the best options in South India. This mountain is situated in the Kodagu district. Kukke Subrahmanya is a famous temple located here. This is a popular Hindu temple. Which holds a lot of importance among South Indian people. This trek starts from here. This Kumara Parvatha trek route is a challenging trek in the Western Ghats. You have to cover 22 km distances in two days and climb up to 5,600 ft. After reaching the temple you have to walk 1.5 km towards the base of the trek. You can visit here in the Winter season. October to February is the best time to do this trek.

Best Time:

Humid climate conditions are the biggest challenge of this trek. So trekkers need to avoid the summer season. Post monsoon season till winter is the best time to visit here(October to February). Every year during summer from 1st March to 30th September the Forest Department closes the Kumara Parvatha trail because of forest fires. In monsoon the routes become slippery and result in injury. So you should avoid summers and monsoons for doing this trek.

 

How To Reach:

Day 1:

From Bengaluru Kukke Subramanya is 280 km. Subramanya railway station is 12 km from the temple( Kukke Subramanya). Limited bus services are available to reach this temple from Mangalore or Bangalore.

There are two routes. One from the Somwarpet side another from the Kukke side.

At first, you have to reach Subrahmanya temple then a 1.6 km walk will take you to the base from where your trek will start. For the first few kilometers, the trail will go through a dense forest. At Bhatt’s house, you can take a break. There is basic food available at Battery Mane. The price is Rs.150 and more. You need to pay Rs. 200 to the Forest House for overnight camping at Battery Mane. 

Day 2:

On the second day, hikers will hike to the Shesha Parvatha which is the toughest part of the trek. Now you have to complete the second forest section of the trail. This part is absolutely gorgeous. Before the forest, once you climb the rock in 20 minutes you reach the Kumara Parvatha. Which is also called the Pushpagiri Peak. You can spend your time here and don’t forget to capture the beautiful scenery.

 

How To Get There:

 

Flight:

From the trek point, The Mangaluru airport is 150 kilometers.

 

Rail:

The closest railway stations are Hassan and Mysore railway stations. You can try Bangalore – Mysore express or Hubli.

 

Road:

From Coorg,you can easily book a cab to Kukke Subramanya Temple. If you

are coming from Bangaluru then it takes an overnight journey.

 

Some Basic Information:

This Kumara Parvatha trek route is a challenging trek in Western Ghats. You have to cover 22 km distances in two days and climb up to 5,600 ft. After reaching Kukke Subrahmanya by your own vehicle, there is a big space to park your vehicle. You can use public transport as well. After reaching you have to walk 1.5 km towards the base of the trek. You can find that this trail is going through a dense forest. You may here the sound of wild animals, birds a few species etc. Remember, during trekking you always carry your water bottle. Because this humid climatic condition may affect you. If you don’t drink enough water your body will be dehydrated which can ruin your total  journey.

You need to remember that camping is not allowed on Kumara Parvatha Peak.

 

What You Need To Carry:

  • You need to carry tents, sleeping bags, and water bottles during the trek.
  • Medicines.
  • Carry lots of water.
  • Torchlights/Flashlights.
  • A good sunscreen.(SPF 50+).
  • A good trekking shoe.
  • Raincoat.
  • Carry dry fruits, chocolates or energy bars. You can also pack some light foods or snakes with you.
  • Be careful of Cobras and leeches throughout the trail.
