How to draw a rat

Step 1:

For this first step in our guide to drawing a rat, we’ll start with the rat’s head and face. First, draw two small circles with a dot inside each for the eyes. These will have curved lines below and above to add more personality to the rat’s expression.

Next, draw the top of the head with a small curved line. You can add the ears by drawing large round shapes next to the top of the head.

Finally, for this step, we will draw the rat’s muzzle. It would be quite small and sharp in real life, but we’ll make it big like a cartoon. Use a long rounded line for the large muzzle, then add a rounded triangular nose at the end.

Step 2:

In this second step, we will now draw the rest of the mouth and some details for drawing your rat. First, draw a few more curved lines to form two long shapes under the mouth for the rat’s teeth.

Then add a rounded line underneath and connect some sharp lines for the hairy underside of the mouth. The reference photo will guide you on how it should examine! Next, we will draw the inner shapes of the ears. Draw lines along the inner perimeters of the ears and add sharp lines near the bottom to give it a furry look.

Step 3:

We’re done with the rat’s head for now, so in this third step of our how-to draw-a-rat guide, we’ll focus on the rodent’s body and limbs. First, one last element to add to the face is a square shape at the bottom of the muzzle tip for some protruding teeth.

Then you can draw the small leg of the arm to the left under the face. Next, we’ll use a combination of curved and irregular lines for the rat’s chest and belly and similar lines for the top of the paw Finish by drawing the big foot on the left; then, we can continue.

Step 4:

You will add a lot to your rat drawing in this fourth step! Using a line similar to the one you used for the rest of the hairy body, we’ll add another arm with a foot at the far right end.

Then draw curved lines for the other side of the body and the top of the other leg. As everyone knows, rats love a piece of cheese! So we will also add a triangular piece of cheese for the rat to look at. Then we’ll be ready for the final details in the next step!

Step 5:

Before we add some colors to this image, we have a few final details to add in this step of our guide to drawing a rat. First, draw another foot with rounded toes to the end of the right leg. Finally, it wouldn’t be a rat without a long, tough tail, so we better add one now too!

The outline of the tail will be drawn using wavy lines; then, you can add texture by drawing lines over it. Be sure to add any additional details or background elements; then, we can move on to the final step!

Step 6:

This is the last step of your rat drawing, and we’ll finish with some colors. Rats can come in many colors, but in this reference image, we’ve gone with darker shades of gray for most of the body and lighter shades for the belly.

Then we used pink for the legs and tail and finished with yellow for the cheese. Are you likely to go for similar colors, or do you prefer to choose unique color options? We can’t wait to see what you’re looking for!
