This Christmas, Choose Less Stress And More Joy!
Christmas is near. . . It is so frustrating that it’s impossible to stop!”
That’s what I felt. The comic strip words made me grin and groan simultaneously. There was so much to do. There were so many things I needed to do: buy, make wrap, bake, wrap, decorate, write and bake. . .
Many expectations were placed upon us. It was a fear that I would not do everything and be less impressive if I did. This verse might have come to mind if I had asked Jesus about all I needed to do (you are ready to celebrate his birthday).
But I didn’t ask. I tried to get his help desperately. I was afflicted for years by Christmas anxiety and every year, the holiday seemed less enjoyable. When I realized Christmas carols were making my physically and emotionally sick, I knew that I needed to do something. Finally, I asked God for His guidance in making Christmas more special.
Reexamine your traditions. You don’t have to keep them because it is a duty or obligation. You don’t have to keep every tradition. Do you have 8 Christmas events you’d like to attend? The best four events are yours to keep and the rest can be saved for next Christmas. Rotating outings, events and the type of cookies you bake can make the holiday feel fresher and more manageable.
Why haven’t I done it sooner?
Although I’ve been planning a birthday party for many years, I didn’t think to ask the guest of honor what kind of party they preferred. It turned out that Jesus is a simple person and will not mind that other guests receive the gifts.
He helped me realize that my holiday wishlist items were optional. He gently reminded us that we were also setting up our children to do the exact same thing as when we become adults. I knew that I needed to refocus. . . to remind me what I was supposed be celebrating. . Keep in mind WHOm I was supposed honor . . To never forget that stress and debt are not his plans.
So I began the process of simplifying Christmas. It was not easy. It was difficult to accept no to things I had previously said yes to. I’m still working on it, and am making more progress every year. These are the lessons I’ve learned. I wish someone had taught me this sooner. . .
8 Christmas Events
The main goal for this season is to create meaningful memories, peace, and joy. These are the key factors to consider when making a decision about what to do and purchase. If it isn’t helping you make meaningful memories or contributes to the season’s joy and peace, skip it.
