How to properly preserve your perfume?

When perfume sticks to our skin, we necessarily want to keep it as long as possible. What are the good reflexes to adopt to keep your favorite perfume for several years? Advice from Aw Scents

From the point of view of European legislation, perfumes fall into the category of cosmetic products. Alongside creams, shampoos, and even make-up products. As such, a certain number of mandatory information must appear on their packaging such as the duration of use after openings. Symbolized by an open jar of cream on which appears a figure or a number followed by the letter for “month”.

  • A perfume that is not opened, does it keep for a long time?

Indeed, unlike other cosmetic products which could be irritating once out of date, ” a perfume will never be dangerous for the skin, even years after its opening”, assures our specialist. On the other hand, it may end up giving off a much less pleasant smell than in the early days, especially if it is not stored correctly. So how do you keep perfume and make it smell as good as ever? We tell you more!

Conversation of perfumes: beware of oxidation

A perfume is an assembly of volatile molecules, which make their way to our nostrils to captivate us with their scents. Whether of natural or synthetic origin, these molecules are sensitive to oxidation. They disorganize on contact with the oxygen present in the air, becoming less powerful and less fragrant.

“This oxidation is favored by three factors”. The two greatest enemies of a fragrance are heat and light. The third factor is the passage of time which induces repeated contact with oxygen. It is a longer-term and less urgent enemy. “Furthermore, some ingredients used in perfumes are more fragile than others and are less resistant to the threats mentioned above. “Let’s take the example of vanilla or vanillin: these are extremely tough molecules that we will still smell 15 years later”, specifies the perfumer. Less time than a more classic perfume in which there will be other ingredients such as spices, wood, or even balms with stronger resistance.

Storage rules for an open perfume

Once you have opened your perfume, that is to say, once it has been sprayed for the first time, it is exposed to an increased risk of oxidation. When the fragrance is taken out of its packaging and opened, the enemies are still the same. If we cannot do anything against the factor “passing time”, we can however act on heat and light. The first instinct? Avoid exposing your perfume near a window or a heater, where it will inevitably be weakened. In summer, if you slip your perfume into your suitcase, you avoid storing your belongings in the car where the temperature can rise very quickly. “The bathroom is actually not the most suitable place to keep a perfume”, agrees Aw Scents. The best way to age your fragrance well is to put it in the refrigerator”. Its smell will still end up altering over the years,

A perfume that is not opened, does it keep for a long time?

A perfume that has never been opened will keep longer than a perfume that has been opened. Preserved from the oxidation that takes place in contact with air, it ages much better. “If we keep it away from heat and light, we can keep it closed for a relatively long time, that is to say at least 5-6 years”, concludes Aw Scents expert.

Thus, from the point of view of preserving juices, it would be preferable to wear only one perfume at a time, and to start a new fragrance only when you have finished the previous one… or else to use several fragrances at the same rate, to create perfume layering for example.

How to keep your perfume? Careful storage

The most precious perfumes often come in an elaborate bottles. The temptation is great to line up these real works of art on the bathroom shelf or on a dressing table in the bedroom. Unfortunately, this exposes the perfume to many attacks: light, temperature variations, and humidity. To ensure optimal conservation, it is better to forget the bathroom, which is too humid: prefer to keep the perfume in the bedroom. Avoid storing the vials in an area exposed to high temperatures, such as near a radiator or on a shelf in the sun. And after each use, put the bottle back in its original packaging. The ideal? Keep the perfume in a cupboard, which will keep it safer from any attack.

The complexity of a perfume

Perfume is a complex and fragile product because it is composed of both natural and synthetic raw materials. In my compositions, I favor natural materials but certain flowers such as lily of the valley or peony refuse to reveal their soul. To have access to the smell of the natural flower, It is then necessary to imitate it, to get as close to it as possible, going through what is called a reconstitution or a reproduction. We can therefore work with these so-called synthetic materials by combining them with natural materials. I use in my compositions about ten different raw materials natural and synthetic.

A perfume, therefore, contains different synthetic materials:

  • Those obtained from natural materials that have been reconstituted
  • Those which have no common particle with nature because they are the result of a chemical reaction. These are laboratory flowers, the advantage is that these materials are stable.

Of course, Awscents perfumes contain a lot of natural raw materials. The natural matter is a living product brought to evolve which changes according to various factors.
