How the Prophets Dealt With Hatred
We Muslims live in a time when many people seem to hate us. We think this hatred is wrong, but to decide how to respond, we should look at how the holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) handled insults during his life. If there was ever a Muslim who was persecuted and hated, it was the Prophet (saw), and we can learn a thing or two from how he dealt with people and situations that are still relevant today.
Forgiveness
This was a big part of what the Prophet (saw) did when his enemies did bad things. Once, he went to the city of Ta’if to escape how his people were treated in Makah. However, the people of Ta’if were just as unwelcoming, sending their children to stone the Prophet (Saw) and chase him out of the city.
After this happened, the angels went to the Prophet (Saw) and asked for permission to kill the people of Ta’if. Those who have been hurt unfairly will see this as a chance to teach their enemies a lesson. But the Prophet (Saw) told the angels to leave the people of Ta’if alone and prayed for them to find the right path.
During the Prophet’s time on earth, many people who hated him became Muslims, especially the people of Makkah. And one thing that might be interesting to us is that someone could hurt you in ways you can’t even describe. But you would still forgive them, even if you can’t get over the pain.
Wahshi was an enemy of Islam at first, but he changed his mind and became a Muslim. Wahshi killed Hamza, the Prophet’s uncle when he did not believe. When Wahshi became a Muslim, he asked the Prophet(Saw) to forgive him, and the Prophet(Saw) did. But the Prophet (Saw) asked Wahshi to hide his face from him (seeing him will remind the Prophet of what he did to his uncle). (Bukhari)
Even though it may hurt, forgiving an enemy is the best thing you can do.
Prayers
In our time, it may seem strange, but the Prophet was known to pray a lot for people who were against him. Before he became a Muslim, Umar ibn Khattab (RA) was a fierce opponent of Islam. The Prophet prayed that Allah (SWT) would help the Muslims by turning Umar to Islam. On the day Umar was going to kill the holy Prophet, he heard his sister reading the holy Qur’an, and he decided to become a Muslim.
Another enemy of Islam, Amr bn Al As, also changed his mind and became a Muslim. When Allah (SWT) said it was time for Amr to accept Islam, he went up to the Prophet, who he was known to hate, and said, “There is no god but Allah” (SWT).
After he became a Muslim, he asked the Prophet (saw) to pray for him, and the Prophet (saw) did so.
Retaliation
The holy Prophet (saw) never got back at an enemy. He only did this when an enemy started a war, and the Muslims had to fight back.
People knew that he never went after people who did him wrong. Instead, he went after people who did wrong to Muslims or even people who weren’t Muslims.
He never fought back by throwing things, calling them names, or doing anything like that. Always told Muslims that they shouldn’t get back at people who hurt them with harm.
He gave enemies what they were owed.
We don’t want anything to do with someone we know who hates us. We don’t even pay them any attention. But the Prophet (saw) treated everyone with respect and fairness, no matter how much they liked him.
If an enemy of Islam owned something, he never took it by force. He also never used force to take over the lands of people who didn’t believe in Islam. We know that he wrote letters to kings in and outside the Arabian Peninsula, inviting them to learn about Islam.
As Muslims, we still find a lot of inspiration in the life of Prophet Muhammad (saw). He was the best of people, and even though many of us would like to say that no one can have the Prophet’s (saw) level of patience and forbearance, as followers of his Sunnah. We can still find it in us to practice those traits of his that made even his harshest critics become his friend.
